A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
