Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
